The most wicked adversaries of our imagination return again and again—Buffy the Vampire Slayer's The Master, Mayor Richard Wilkins III, Glory, The First; Dr. Who's the Daleks, the Cybermen, Bad Wolf; Harry Potter's He Who Must Not Be Named; and Battlestar Galactica's "all this has happened before, and all this will happen again." Never mind the classic agents of nightmares—the Devil, the Grim Reaper, the Undead, and untold more. And while our mayor may not ascend into an actual enormous snake, and our lovers do not usually turn to soulless vampires bent on destroying the world via demon-resurrection, and our best friend's eyes don't normally flick to black due to dark magic, there is some authenticity in those images.

Longtime friends and notable artists Harold Grabitske and Ivan Whillock, who often showed work together in the early days of their art careers, found each other again through a class at Crossings. Now, an exhibit of their retrospective and current works will be at the art gallery May 1-31. A public reception is Sun., May 6, at 2 p.m.

Whillock and Grabitske roomed together at college, attended summer arts classes at Grand Marais together, eventually showed together and even ended up teaching at the same school in Spring Grove.

They had long conversations about art and shared studio space in an old building on the property Whillock rented while teaching in Spring Grove. They experimented with casting and other art forms and exhibited their work in Winona, Rochester, at the Minnesota State Fair and elsewhere around the state.

Whillock, who worked exclusively in wood for 20 years, will show his sculptures at Crossings, though he has recently ... (Read more)

Cain Schulte Contemporary Art is pleased to present Gyöngy Laky: "CROSSOVER". The show will run from May 3 to June 9, 2012.

In her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Gyöngy Laky will present a series of work examining our complex relationship with nature. Sculptural pieces containing words, letters, and symbols are made of painted and stained branches and twigs combined with screws, nails, wires, and plastic figurines.

This show will feature a selection of work exploring on the transitional space between visual and textual aspects of Laky’s work, such as Writing on the Wall, a grid of wooden objects seemingly shifting between two symbolic information codes. The organic essence of the natural wood contrasted with the spiky industrial elements draws upon the ambivalence of the natural and artificial, organic and industrial, and encapsulate co-existing feelings of violence and serenity, aggression and sanctuary.
